Today we went over the Cold War. We took notes and also did a web quest/worksheet on The Berlin Wall.

Main Points

  • The Cold War didn't involve direct fighting. The Cold War was more of the mind and involved no weaponry.

  • Main Leaders were Churchill (He was a cranky and rude leader of the UK. Later to be repaved by Clement Atlee.), Stalin (leader of Russia), and Roosevelt (Leader of the U.S. After he died, Harry Truman took over).

  • The US and UK had democracies, while Russia a communist government.

  • After WW2, the iron curtain was drawn. (A imaginary line, starting at Finland then around Germany, and down.) The iron curtain separated Communist governments from Democracies.

  • Berlin was separated. half was a democracy (U.S) while the other half was communist (Russia). Russia built the Berlin Wall. Go to this website to learn more. (PS- this is the website for the web quest)

Today we talked about NATO, the Warsaw Pact, the Arms Race and Bomb Shelters.

- NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization
1. Member Nations West Europe, U.S., and Canada
2. An agreement that an attack against one was an attack on all
- Warsaw Pact:
1. Same as NATO but with Eastern European countries and the Soviet Union
2. China falls to Communism

- Life in the 1950's Arms Race:
1. The Soviet Union creates it's first hydrogen bomb in 1953
2. They also launch the first satellite to orbit the earth (Sputnik)
a. The U.S. feared Sputnik held the bomb
3. This creates an arms race (rise of technology) to see who could create a better army to kill the other

- Bomb Shelters:
1. Families and communities created strategies to protect from the potential attack
2. Things like bomb shelters or bomb drills in school

Today, we learned more about the Cold War and got into the Korean War and how America helped at home. We talked briefly about the baby boomers of the 1950s and the 50's economic improvement.

The Korean War aka. The Forgotten War (1950-1952)
  • After WWII, Japan surrendered Korea. The Soviets and the Americans both wanted to occupy it.
  • Their compromise was the 38th Parallel, which created North and South Korea. Soviets would get the north and Americans would get the south.
  • The Koreans did not like this agreement, so the North Koreans invaded South Korea to reunite the country
  • America considered it an attack on democracy, and was afraid that Korea would fall to communism as China did.
  • President Harry Truman orders General Macarthur (hero of WWII) to defend South Korea, but he gets carried away and the conflict gets worse.
  • 54,000 Americans were killed and the war ended with a cease fire. Korea was again divided by the 38th parallel
The Cold War At Home
  • During the Great Depression, many Americans joined the Communist Party. As a result, the government started an anti-Communism campaign
  • All government employees had to go through a Loyalty Review Board, which made sure they weren't Communist
  • The McCarran-Walter Act limited immigration
  • Black Lists were created by entertainment studios, which were lists of entertainment figures that might be Communist. 10 people refused to deny their political affiliation, and they were called the Hollywood 10.
  • Congress asked them "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?"
McCarthy Era
  • Senator Joe McCarthy was the political master of the Communist Scare, another name for America's anti-Commie campaign
  • Claimed that Communists were infiltrating everything
  • Was voted out of office in 1954 after accusing the military of being "full of Communists"
